Kai Bird, Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, is the coauthor (with his wife, Susan Goldmark) of American Scoundrel: Roy Cohn's Dark Journey from Joe McCarthy to Donald Trump (2026). In praise, Jon Meacham called it “powerful and illuminating”; Stacey Schiff called it, “a propulsive mind-boggling read”; and Ken Auletta called it, “an extraordinary up-close view of Cohn’s internal wiring.”
With Martin Sherwin, Bird shared the Pulitzer for American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005), a #1 New York Times bestseller that inspired the Oscar-winning blockbuster, "Oppenheimer" (2023).
Susan Goldmark, coauthor of American Scoundrel, has spent her career advancing economic and social development in more than 75 countries through consulting, nonprofit leadership, and the World Bank.
She has managed multibillion-dollar social, infrastructure, and environmental portfolios, launched carbon trading and poverty reduction initiatives, and served as the World Bank’s Country Director in Nepal and later in multiple Latin American nations. Married to Kai Bird for more than 50 years, Goldmark also led the research for American Scoundrel.
