You are cordially invited to Barzakh's Magazine's Spring Celebration at the Albany Distilling Co.
Friday, April 29th from 7 to 10 p.m.
75 Livingston Avenue, Albany, NY 12207
Phone: (518) 949-2472
Free and open to the public (21 and older)
The celebration will feature live music from Doctor Baker as well as short readings of prose and poetry from the digital pages of Barzakh, an online literary and arts journal run by the graduate students in the English department at the University at Albany.
The goal of this year's celebration will be to raise not only some fun but also some funds to assist Barzakh with its mission of publishing socially-engaged art and writing.
The Barzakh-Doctor Baker connection
UAlbany Professor of English Edward Schwarzschild, his department’s director of creative writing, has served as Barzakh’s faculty advisor the past four years. He also plays guitar and sings in the Doctor Baker band.
In a December 2021 story published on albany.edu, Ed said, “This can’t be overstated, it is the graduate students who run Barzakh. It’s their creation and it’s their serious effort and sincere devotion that has continued to make the journal an essential part of UAlbany campus culture as well as a powerful voice for international literature beyond the campus.”
“Barzakh” is an Arabic word/concept that names the connecting link, the “between” of something, such as different spheres of existence.
Barzakh is currently accepting original art, poetry, and prose submissions for our Summer 2022 issue.
