GivingTuesday (all one word, no spaces) was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good.

Now an international movement, GivingTuesday has its origins in New York City at the 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City. GivingTuesday is now an independent nonprofit and a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

We encourage everyone to help their neighbors and better their community by volunteering, advocacy, and acts of kindness.

We've listed just a few local groups that do good work and can use your help, whether it's a donation or volunteer work.

The University at Albany's Purple Pantry is stocked with a variety of non-perishable foods, frozen foods, fresh produce, personal items and toiletries. It is open to all current UAlbany students, faculty and staff.

In addition to providing immediate food necessities, the Purple Pantry hosts programs designed to assist students with meeting their basic needs. These programs include screenings for WIC/SNAP benefits, nutritionist consultations, financial management and other initiatives. More information.

UAlbany's Purple Threads is a professional closet offering free professional clothing to current UAlbany students. Purple Threads is in dire need of men's suits, shirts, sport coats and dress pants in small, medium and large sizes. More information.

Established in 2009, Grassroots Givers creates opportunities for individuals and families who are experiencing poverty in the Albany area by providing access to books, clothing, and home essentials. More information.

For more than 50 years, Historic Albany Foundation has worked to preserve, protect, and promote the architecture and cultural heritage that make Albany unique. Their work helps safeguard the irreplaceable buildings, stories, and spaces that define the region. On GivingTuesday, HAF is promoting "Giving Toolsday" — "the perfect opportunity to support our Tool Lending Library on this special global day of giving."
