Attendees of our Albany Film Festival last month will remember filmmaker Stanley Nelson. He and his wife, executive producer Marcia Smith, received our Ironweed Awards for their contribution to the film industry. They also spoke at a screening and discussion of their Oscar-nominated documentary "Attica."
Nelson was also our guest in 2017 for a screening and discussion of his Emmy Award-winning documentary "The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution." The film combines archival footage and interviews with surviving Panthers and FBI agents to tell the story of the revolutionary black organization the Black Panther Party.
On Thursday, Nelson and Smith's Firelight Media and WMHT will present a special virtual screening and discussion about "The Black Panthers" film from 6 to 8 p.m.
The event will feature an extended clip of the documentary followed by a conversation with Nelson, author and activist Dr. Alice Green, and Lexis Figurero, a local leader and advocate in the Black Lives Matter movement. The conversation will be moderated by Shawn Young, Co-founder of All of US Community Action Group.
