Applications open for Fall 2026 Community Poetry Writing Salon

Application deadline Friday, August 7.

UAlbany Department of English Poet-in-Residence Anna Moschovakis will offer a community poetry writing salon / workshop in Fall 2026 with the New York State Writers Institute.

The workshop will take place in-person on the UAlbany Uptown Campus on seven Tuesday nights beginning after Labor Day and concluding on Tuesday, December 1.

These sessions will focus on generating new writing, and on fostering a curious, experimental, and playful relationship to the written word. Each participant will be offered the opportunity and guidance to create a small DIY publication at the end of the course.

This workshop is offered for non-credit, free of charge for community members. The workshop schedule will include the opportunity to attend events with two poetry-related speakers featured by the NYS Writers Institute during the fall semester.

Some sessions will also be open to Moschovakis’ advanced writing students in her poetry workshop for advanced English undergraduate and graduate students for the opportunity for additional critique.

To be considered, please submit a word document or pdf which includes the following:

• Brief poetry writing sample (up to 3 pages)

• List two or three authors or books you have recently enjoyed.

• A paragraph introducing yourself and your interest in participating in these sessions.

About Anna Moschovakis

Anna Moschovakis, poet, novelist and translator, joins us as the new Poet-in-Residence in the University at Albany English Department. With French Senegalese novelist David Diop, she shared the 2021 International Booker Prize for her translation of Diop’s novel, At Night All Blood Is Black, about the experiences of French African troops amid the carnage of World War 1.

Her poetry collections include You and Three Others Are Approaching a Lake (2011), winner of the James Laughlin Award of the Academy of American Poets; and They and We Will Get into Trouble for This (2016), named a best book of the year by The New Yorker.

Moschovakis will present selections of her own work, as well as work by UAlbany students and Community Workshop poets, at a Writers Institute event on Tuesday, December 1. Event details.
