Kristen Millares Young

"As a journalist, I'd always been interested in finding that space between what people say and what they do. That's the way we use rhetoric to hold politicians accountable...

As a novelist, I'm much more interested in that fertile territory between what we say and what we think."

Kristen Millares Young

Kristen Millares Young, investigative journalist, essayist, and author of her debut novel, Subduction, named a staff pick by The Paris Review.

Called "whip-smart" by The Washington Post and a "brilliant debut" by The Seattle Times, Subduction is a lyric retelling of the troubled history of encounter in the Americas. Subduction was named a Top 2020 Feminist Book by Ms. Magazine.

A prize-winning investigative journalist, book critic and essayist, Kristen serves as the 2018-2020 Prose Writer-in-Residence at Hugo House. Kristen was the researcher for the New York Times team that produced "Snow Fall," which won a Pulitzer and a Peabody in 2013.
